About Kelly Canby

Quick bio:
Author/Illustrator Kelly Canby was born in London, England, at a very young age. She now lives in Perth, Western Australia, and is quite a bit older.
Kelly spends her days in the studio drawing and painting and when she isn’t in the studio drawing and painting she’s probably in another room drawing and paining.
She draws and paints a lot.
Also, she is surprisingly good at parallel parking.

Official (longer) bio:

Kelly Canby is an internationally published illustrator and author, of over a dozen books. Kelly was born in London, England, but has lived in Australia since the age of three, which is probably around the same age she started playing with pencils and crayons, and it was probably only a few years after that that she decided playing with pencils and crayons was something she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

With a Bachelor of Art in Design from Curtin University, Kelly applies her edgy, quirky style to the pages of everything from picture books, to chapter books, to early reader books, to colouring books and beyond! Kelly’s books are published widely throughout the US and the UK.

Kelly is represented internationally by The Bright Agency.

  1. whoa dedication! my project is simply to spend 10mins every day doing ANYTHING creative. i like writing, shooting films and drawing so i do whatever i feel like doing. your illustrations are so fun and awesome! hope you accomplish your goal-almost there! 🙂

    • Thanks! Sometimes 10 mins a day is all you need to feel like you’ve scratch your creative itch, it’s better than doing nothing at all! Goodluck!

    • Thanks Marti! That’s the plan. I’m actually in the process of illustrating my own book, next step, find someone to publish it!

      • Good luck. If you have any tips for success, please share. My book is currently sitting in some publisher’s in tray ( gathering dust i fear!)

      • Yikes! I hope not, I hope you hear some good news soon. Did you go through a literary agent or send it in yourself? Ohh and what kind of book is it? A children’s book?

      • It’s a children’s picture book. Went the unsolicited manuscript approach (mainly b/c my first choice in publishers did not accept literary agents). So in fairness, it’s only been 2 months with one publisher so far…..but why one? Well that seems to be the ‘ethics’ as written on many book related sites. The problem is that they expect you trundle through them one at a time and then you have to give them anything from 3 to 6 months to review. You mightn’t even hear back from them and are expected to assume you were just unsuccessful……anyway, that’s the game I guess.

      • Mmm, not sure if my reply went through. Good luck in yourpublishing endeavours and please shareany learnings along the way. My recent attempt at publishing appears to be gathering dust in an editor’s in tray

  2. Hi Kelly, love your blog…very fun!

I’m looking for an Illustrator for my children’s book. Are you interested in discussing this project? I’m self-publishing.

  3. Hi, Kelly. Noah S. is a friend of mine, and I saw his post today on Facebook about your 365 project. I love your work, and wanted to say that I wish we were neighbors! Also that you are definitely not alone (albeit in a different hemisphere). I’m a graphic designer and illustrator, too, and I’ve lost a little of my artwork since we were blessed with a daughter in 2008. I also work in several different illustration styles, and I was so happy for you that you have found ‘your style’ in your project! Your story has inspired me to consider taking on Noah’s 365 challenge… best wishes with your book and your blog!

    • Hi Laura, WOW thank you so much. Really, thank you for taking the time to say such nice things, it was so lovely of you. I’d definitely recommend a 365 project if you’re feeling like you need a little of your creativity back, its really been amazing, I’m kind of glad its over but, its been amazing, haha! Lucky you too to be friends with the author of such an inspiring book, if I were you I’d have that man over for dinner every weekend and I’d be constantly picking his brain! Probably a good thing you all live so far away…

Thanks again, Laura and I hope you keep feeling inspired for a long time xxx

  4. You’re so welcome, Kelly. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to order Noah’s book, but I finally got a copy and read 365 today. It never occurred to me to have Noah over to our house to dinner (we’re in the ‘burbs and he’s cool city guy), but we used to meet up for lunch at various restaurants in Richmond before I had my daughter (which were some very inspiring, creative lunches, as I’m sure you can imagine) – but that is a great idea! More brilliant thinking from you! I’ll let you know when I get started, I’ve been mulling over my ideas for a while now and think I’ve settled on my direction now. Take care! If you’re ever in Virginia, let me know!

  5. Hi we’ve nominated you for a Liebster Award, because we felt you and your blog deserved it. You don’t have to pass it on or anything but we’re really interested in your answers to our questions.
